Jumping out of the Shell

Living out of the shell is great … it’s the only way to get light and grow. But, getting out of the shell can be tough.

First, like a baby bird, you have to crack the shell. If you are smart or lucky, you start chipping away early.

It becomes tougher to get out as you get older. The shell might be harder and you are not as strong. Or, maybe the shell has become very, very comfortable. The view inside is pretty limited but it’s familiar.

Sometimes it takes drastic measures to get out …

I could not have done this without peer pressure from the truly super nut Ty, fellow nuts and first timer jumpers Joanna, Maria and Burke, and just plain nuts, Steve and Ellyn. Maria lives out of the shell, but had never flown in a plane before. Not only did she jump out of the plane, she also lost her both her sneakers and socks during her fall.

Now that I’ve cracked my shell, maybe I can learn to dance.

Not only am I a nut, but I’m also nuts about nuts. I think about them all of the time. I live and love nuts.
I’ve been nuts long enough to know that I’m not alone. Most people are at least a little nuts – whether in or out of the shell — though out is better. A nut out of the shell can grow. Even a slightly cracked shell can allow the light in. Nuts that stay in the shell risk rot and shriveling.

So, how did nuts come to mean crazy, as in he went nuts? Or crazy about… like football nut and nuts for you, or off his/her nut? Or the basic costs of business, as in the cab driver made his nut with his first fare? (Yes, that’s a real expression… look it up). There are lots of explanations, I especially like the Word-Detective’s at http://www.word-detective.com/. Please share if you find an expression or explanation not readily available for all nuts.

Here are a few guidelines for any post and suggestions:

Judge Nut; we’re all nuts and in this together, so no nut need judge another lest they be judged.

No anatomical references. Nut Meg has heard most of them, and is nut interested in the rest.

Little Nutthings is all inclusive; all good nuts are welcome. Human nuts are welcome if they’re a little nuts, really nuts, in or out of the shell. Even non-nuts are welcome — everyone has nutty friends and relatives.

All nuts in the plant world are also welcome. They need not be “true” nuts like an acorn, chestnut, hickory or hazelnut to be a part of Little Nutthings. Personally, I’m partial to peanuts, which are really legumes. I love them because they look so much like us.
